Move-out cleaning is one of those tasks that feels straightforward until you’re standing in an empty apartment at 10pm wondering why you didn’t start sooner. Here’s what property managers and landlords actually look for — and how to make sure every box gets checked.
Kitchen: The Make-or-Break Room
This is where most deposits are lost. Clean inside and behind the oven and refrigerator (not just the surfaces). Degrease the stovetop, oven interior, range hood filter, and microwave. Wipe down every cabinet — interior and exterior. Descale the sink and faucet.
Bathrooms
Remove all soap scum, hard water deposits, and mildew from tile, grout, shower doors, and tubs. The toilet should be cleaned inside the bowl and around the base. Replace or clean the toilet seat if needed. Polish mirrors and chrome fixtures.
Walls & Baseboards
Scuffs and marks on painted walls are common deduction points. Use a magic eraser or damp cloth on flat/eggshell paint carefully. Baseboards collect dust and pet hair — these are almost always inspected.
Floors
Hardwood and tile floors should be swept, mopped, and spot-treated for stains. Carpets need a thorough vacuum at minimum — steam cleaning may be required per your lease.
Don’t Forget
Window sills and tracks, ceiling fans and light fixtures, inside closets, door frames and handles, and any outdoor spaces like balconies or patios. These are the spots that separate a good clean from a great one.
